Every business in the UK is required to file some form of tax return (on paper or online) with HM Revenue & Customs at the end of the year.
You must fill in a tax return and pay tax using the self assessment system if you are:

The tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April the next year. The deadline for sending your completed tax return back to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) depends on whether you submit a paper return (31st October) or file it online (31st January). If you receive a tax return, the law says you must fill it in.

- A member of an unincorporated partnership
- A company director (unless it's an unpaid position for a not-for-profit organisation like charity)
- Employed and self-employed
- A minister of religion
- A trustee or the executor of an estate
- A landlord
- Your household receives Child Benefit and you have income in excess of £50,000
- You have income from overseas
- You have sold or given an asset away
- You’ve lived or worked abroad or aren’t domiciled in the UK

- An automatic, initial £100 penalty, which will apply even if there is less than £100 tax to pay or the tax due is paid on time
- 3 months late: Additional daily penalties of £10 per day – up to a maximum of £900
- 6 months late: A further penalty of 5% of the tax due or £300 – whichever is greater
- 12 months late: Another 5% of the tax due or £300 – whichever is greater
- In some of the most severe cases, the penalty after 12 months can be up to 100% of the tax due

Partnership Tax Returns (HMRC SA800)
When trading in partnership you are required to complete and submit a Partnership Tax Return together with individual partner's self assessment tax return to HM Revenue & Customs.

Corporation Tax Returns (HMRC CT600)
Limited companies are also subject to Corporation Tax on their business profits each year (unless dormant). All corporation tax returns for accounting periods must now be filed online.
